Now that temperatures are dropping. there are a few things to keep in mind to help your horses stay healthy. The biggest problem this time of year is impaction colic. The water is cold and they don't want to drink it, at the same time that dry feed (hay) is being offered more. Simply put, an impaction results when gut contents are drier than normal resulting in a slowing of the gut motion. This results in pain and further slowing. There are several easy preventive measures to take to help avoid this problem. 1 . add 1 TBSP salt to meals; 2. add warm water to meals, 3. add a couple of cups to soaked beet pulp to a meal a day. Beet pulp will typically double in bulk after soaking, so plan accordingly. If you only have 1 or 2 horses, get together with a friend and split a bag of beetpulp. You don't have to follow all these steps every day either. It's not meant to be a second job! For example, my horse gets the beet pulp with water to make the meal the consistency of oatmeal in the very cold evenings. Most mornings she gets salt and or water. Modify this depending on your horse's preferences. Remember just a little extra care can help avoid a stresful and costly colic epidode along the way.
